Creative nonfiction (also
known as literary or narrative nonfiction) is a genre of writing that uses
literary styles and techniques to create factually accurate narratives.
Creative nonfiction contrasts with other nonfiction, such as technical writing
or journalism, which is also rooted in accurate fact, but is not primarily
written in service to its craft. As a genre, creative nonfiction is still
relatively young, and is only beginning to be scrutinized with the same
critical analysis given to fiction and poetry.
Types of Creative Nonfiction
An essay is a piece of
writing which is often written from an author's personal point of view. Essays
can consist of a number of elements, including: literary criticism, political
manifestos, learned arguments, observations of daily life, recollections, and
reflections of the author. The definition of an essay is vague, overlapping
with those of an article and a short story.
A biography is a detailed
description or account of someone's life. It presents a subject's life story,
highlighting various aspects of his or her life, including intimate details of
experience, and may include an analysis of a subject's personality.
An autobiography is an
account of the life of a person, written by its subject.
A journal is a daily record
of events or business; a private journal is usually referred to as a diary.
